SPONGEBOB PHOTO OP

WHAT YOU NEED
A twin-sized sheet of egg-crate foam mattress padding*
Large sheet of brown craft paper
White craft glue or double-sided poster mounting tape
Red and white construction paper
Black marker
Velcro strips or ribbon ties
Camera

* You can buy a mattress pad in the camping section of most discount stores for under $10. Or check the packing supply section of office supply stores.

WHAT YOU DO
1. Cut the foam to be about 21" x 60".

2. Fold the foam in half the long way.

3. Cut a hole about 7 inches below the fold, around the size of your child's face. This is the body of SpongeBob.

4. For the shorts: Cut a piece of brown craft paper that is 2 ˝ feet across by 7 inches high. Wrap this sheet around the bottom part of the "sponge," bringing it around the sides and to the back of the front piece. You can secure it with white craft glue. (Gluing tip: It's tricky to glue flat paper to a bumpy surface! Apply the glue to the tops of the bumps and then press the paper down. You can also use double-sided poster mounting tape to attach the construction paper pieces.) Decorate the front of the brown paper to look like SpongeBob's shorts.

5. For the shirt and tie: Glue white construction paper on for his shirt, and red for his tie. Use black markers to draw the collar and add definition around the tie. Add black strips for his belt.

6. For the eyes: Make big white circles out of construction paper and glue them above the face hole you cut (the left eye slightly overlaps the right). Make small blue circles inside the eyes, and smaller black circles within the blue. Glue three black eyelashes above each eye.

7. For the mouth: Create SpongeBob's mouth from some black construction paper, adding two big white teeth and a pink tongue. Glue the mouth underneath the face hole.

8. Attach Velcro straps or ribbon ties to the sides so that children can easily slip the giant SpongeBob on and off over their heads. You can use a stapler to attach these straps securely.

9. Take an extra strip of foam (19" x 5") and place it inside SpongBob underneath the fold at the top. This cushioning will rest on the child's head and allow the face hole to stay in position, with SpongeBob's eyes above the child's face. The foam should just cling in place with no need to attach it.

10. Take pictures of each child in the costume!

Light blue construction paper
